Mihachi (味八) Ramen & Shinjuku Late Nights

Mihachi is a couple of blocks from the Shinjuku train station.  It’s right next to Shinjuku’s Piss Alley.

After a long day in Osaka, my fat ass was craving a nice hot bowl of udon.  Unfortunately, there was none to be found.  I didn’t want yakitori cause I have it planned for the another night.  As you can tell, my specialty is meal prepping in a way.  However, the only meal prepping I usually do is plan where I’m going to eat when I’m on a trip.

Mihachi was the only soup based shop opened at 12 AM.   They’re opened 24 hours.  It’s a ramen house with the typical ticket machine to pay and order ramen.  Mihachi isn’t a high-end ramen nor does it have a line out the door like Ichiran.  But they serve tsukemen.   I went with a side of Gyoza and a bowl of Tsukemen.

  • Gyoza – The Gyoza came out cold.  It really made it uneatable.  However, that didn’t stop me from dipping it into the soy sauce then stuff my face with it.  The oily wrap was thick with stuffing dry as someone who needed a lotion bottle for their dry skin.

  • Tsukemen –  The pork based broth had one thin slice of pork.  It lacked any moisture like California during its drought.  However, they were generous with the ramen portion.  The ramen’s texture was chewy and did a good decent job of soaking up the broth.  The broth was savory with a decent amount of flavor; it wasn’t too salty but had a nice balance of fatty oils.

Lastly, Mihachi is a good option for late night ramen.  I don’t think it’ll be my first choice if I was craving a large bowl of sodium.  They’re opened 24 hours so it’s a good option after a stroll through Golden Cai or Piss Alley.  Furthermore, the staff spoke really good English, so I don’t suggest saying anything bad about them.
