Gogung is a popular bibimbap chain in Korea. There’s multiple locations throughout Seoul.

Gogung is located in the popular shopping district of Myeong-dong. Myeong-dong is famous for its abundant retail shops. The retail shops are more urban when compared to the upscale Gangnam. Gangnam is geared towards the older crowd and Myeong-dong is geared towards the young professionals.
With young professionals, they usually prefer quick cheap meals as their palates evolve and their salaries increase. I’m going to say until their salaries increase cause I was eating McDonald’s well into my career. Shit. I still eat it cause I can’t resist those damn golden fries. It’s a terrible guilty pleasure. I wish I could afford another terrible habit that helps with my weight loss like cocaine.
However, Gogung is definitely not a cheap bibimbap option. The set menus are around 40 USD, but they includes a few dishes. The restaurant chain has been around since 1973, which makes it have more history than Rome. I know. It’s hard to believe a Korean restaurant has more history than Rome but anything is possible if America elected an egotistical moronic reality TV star.
Gogung’s bibimbap had all the characteristics of bibimbap. The colorful vegetables with an egg yolk on top of the burnt rice served in a cast iron bowl with banchans. The crisp vegetables were fresh and crunchy; the rice had a burnt layer due to the cast iron bowl. It was a solid bibimbap option. The colorful presentation made me wish the bibimbap included magic mushrooms and a class of whiskey. Why whiskey? Cause I’m a classy man.
Gogung isn’t a cheap option. The bibimbap is solid, but there are other solid options in the area like Yoogane or Choi-ssi Ajeossi. It’s a convenient option if you’re in the Myeong-dong district. The colorful bibimbap presentation reminded me of the lights at some of the raves I used to attend while on shrooms and/or acid. Don’t worry. I don’t attend raves anymore.
