Melbourne’s Union Lane & Street Art

Union Lane is the younger sibling of the famous Hosier Lane that doesn’t get as much attention as the older sibling.  However, it’s just as charming.

It’s one of the many hidden laneways in Melbourne, Australia.  Union Lane is plastered with street art and murals.   It’s definitely a site to see and a bit nostalgic to walk-through the colors of the murals, pieces and throw-ups.  When I say “throw-ups”, I don’t mean bodily fluid from drinking or eating too much.

Well, it’s nostalgic if you could get pass the smell of piss.  No, it seriously smells like piss.  It’s like a bunch of drunk Aussies came from Happy Hour and decided to urinate every step of Union Lane from beginning to end.  I guess the Aussies are pretty care free when it comes stuff like that.  I mean they don’t even have toilet seat covers in any of their establishments, so go figure.

What’s crazy about Union Lane?  There are no f*cks given here.  I was there in broad daylight watching an artist add to the wall with his spray cans and fat tips.  From my junior high days, we used to wait until night fall to go to work but he seriously did not give a f*ck.   Thug Life.  Much props.  However, I’ve been told the cops don’t bother street artists.

Lastly, it’s a must-stop when you’re in Melbourne.  It’s right next to David Jones.  Every city has its art district.  Shanghai has 50 Moganshan Road.  New York is scattered everywhere.  Los Angeles has the Art District.  Melbourne does top the cities I’ve visited with their multiple laneways.
