Ponyfish Island is a bar under the Southbank bridge. The name makes no damn sense at all.

Who cares about the name, right? I don’t care as long as it serves alcohol and I could people watch. It has a great view of the Yarra river and Southbank Promendae. I could see the “locks of love” on the bridge where people place locks to symbolize their relationship. Remember that one person you said you couldn’t live without? Well, look at you living and shit.

Who would have thought an Australian would be so inspired by the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Under the Bridge to open a bar under a bridge? Well, the song was actually about heroin but it’s close enough. You get the point I’m trying to make. I was here back during Christmas one year. It was pretty packed around 4:00 PM.
I think it’s because of two things:
- Australians love to drink, and
- Australians love to drink.
In all seriousness, it’s a really great spot to grab a drink and relax. It’s a couple of steps from the Crown Casino and Downtown Melbourne. I totally recommend it to any tourist or non-locals because it seems like the locals don’t like this spot. Who cares about the locals, right? Just give me my damn beer.
