Mapo Galbi & LA’s K-Town

I’ve been Mapo Galbi a few times.  They’re the only restaurant that serves Dak Galbi.  It’s right on the Olympic and offers parking in the front or the parking lot before the restaurant.

It’s your typical Korean restaurant where the furniture is old and the restaurant is small. The place was a bit cramp but I didn’t really mind because I was there for the food.  I could be eating in a dark alley and wouldn’t mind as long as the food is good.  I’ve eaten a lot of shady places and questionable food quality like McDonald’s.

The service is your typical Korean service with its service bell.  The server came by frequently to check on the chicken.  It’s a really small restaurant run by a few women.  They remind you of your aunts and grandma who used to slap you for not finishing your meal or give you a guilt trip about the starving people in the world.  Now, that I think of it.  I know why I was overweight when I was younger and still overweight today.

Now, the food. Mapo Galbi only serves one thing, which is Dak Galbi.  It’s their bread and butter.  We got 3 orders of the Dak Galbi and it was served with a few banchans. The Galbi itself was kind of spicy, mixed with kim chi, and best of all it had cheese. The chicken was tender and juicy because they use thighs. When she felt it was time, she added the cheese to the chicken.  The cheese complimented the chicken so well when it melted on top of the chicken and kim chi.  Lastly, they add ramen into the fold once everything is cooked.  My fatty mouth is watering thinking about the salmonella.

Overall, Mapo Galbi serves Korean comfort food.  The place isn’t like your high-end restaurant with the ambiance and pretentious people.  It was strictly about the food.  The only con about the restaurant is consistency.  Mapo Galbi could be really good when they do it right but okay when they don’t.  It’s like having one night stands.  Some are better than others.
